Nitrous Oxide
Laughing Gas for Dental Patients
Nitrous oxide — often called laughing gas — is a colorless, non-irritating gas with a slightly sweet scent that you inhale during treatment.

Used safely in dentistry for many years, nitrous oxide sedation involves a mixture of 50–70% oxygen and no less than 30% nitrous oxide, ensuring a safe and balanced experience.
Patients remain awake, able to breathe independently, and maintain control over their body during the procedure.

You may experience mild memory loss of the appointment and feel so relaxed that you may even drift off to sleep.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation

-
The level of sedation can be adjusted at any time during your procedure.
-
There are no lingering after-effects, such as a "hangover" feeling.
-
It is considered very safe, with no harmful impact on the heart, lungs, or other organs.
-
It helps greatly in reducing a sensitive gag reflex.
-
Nitrous oxide takes effect quickly — within 20 seconds — and its full relaxation and pain-relief benefits develop in just a few minutes.
When Nitrous Oxide May Not Be Recommended

Nitrous oxide is not advised if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It may also be avoided if you have emphysema, certain chest conditions, multiple sclerosis (M.S.), a cold, or any breathing difficulties.

If you’re unsure whether nitrous oxide is right for you, we encourage you to request a “5-minute trial” to see how you feel before proceeding with treatment.
