When is extraction the right choice?

Dr. Sang Kim will always try to save a natural tooth when possible. But sometimes the damage is too extensive, the infection too deep, or the risk of keeping the tooth outweighs the benefit of preserving it. At Bridgewater Dental Center, emergency extractions are recommended when:

  • A tooth is fractured below the gum line and cannot support a crown or other restoration
  • A severe dental abscess has destroyed too much bone or tooth structure for a root canal to succeed
  • Advanced periodontal disease has loosened the tooth beyond the point of recovery
  • A badly decayed tooth poses a risk of spreading infection to neighboring teeth or into the jaw
  • A cracked tooth has split in a way that makes repair impossible

What to expect during the procedure

Dr. Kim begins by numbing the area thoroughly so you won't feel pain during the extraction. For straightforward cases, the tooth is gently loosened and removed in a matter of minutes. More complex situations — such as a tooth broken at the gum line — may require a surgical approach where a small amount of gum tissue or bone is adjusted to access the tooth safely. Either way, the goal is a clean, complete removal with minimal disruption to the surrounding tissue.

Sedation options for your comfort

We know that hearing the word "extraction" can trigger anxiety, especially during an already stressful emergency. That's why we offer sedation dentistry for patients who need it:

  • Nitrous oxide — Inhaled through a small mask, nitrous helps you relax while remaining fully awake and aware. The effects wear off within minutes after the procedure.
  • Oral sedation— A prescribed medication taken before your appointment produces a deeper level of relaxation. You'll need someone to drive you home, but you'll remember little of the procedure itself.

Aftercare and recovery

Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth recovery. Dr. Kim will provide you with detailed instructions, but here are the basics:

  • Bite gently on gauze for thirty to sixty minutes after the extraction to allow a blood clot to form
  • Avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or spitting forcefully for at least 24 hours — these can dislodge the clot and cause a painful condition called dry socket
  • Eat soft foods for the first few days and chew on the opposite side of your mouth
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water starting the day after the procedure to keep the area clean
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed and use a cold compress to manage swelling

Replacing the tooth

Once the extraction site has healed, Dr. Kim will discuss options for replacing the missing tooth. A gap left untreated can cause neighboring teeth to shift and affect your bite over time. Options include dental implants, bridges, and partial dentures depending on your needs and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a tooth extraction painful?+

Dr. Kim thoroughly numbs the area before beginning, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. You may feel pressure, but not sharp pain. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation for patients who need extra comfort.

How long does recovery take after an emergency extraction?+

Most patients feel significantly better within two to three days. The extraction site typically heals fully within one to two weeks. Dr. Kim will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help your recovery go smoothly.

What is dry socket and how do I prevent it?+

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged, exposing the underlying bone. To prevent it, avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, and spitting forcefully for at least 24 hours after your extraction.

Will I need to replace the extracted tooth?+

In most cases, yes. A gap left by a missing tooth can cause neighboring teeth to shift and affect your bite over time. Dr. Kim will discuss replacement options like implants, bridges, or partial dentures once the site has healed.

Can I eat after a tooth extraction?+

Stick to soft, lukewarm foods for the first few days — things like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup. Avoid hot foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. You can gradually return to your normal diet as the area heals.

How much does an emergency extraction cost in Bridgewater?+

The cost depends on the complexity of the extraction. We accept most dental insurance plans and offer our Virginia Dental Club membership for patients without coverage. We'll always discuss costs with you before proceeding.
