Why fillings and crowns come loose
Dental restorations are built to last, but they don't last forever. Over time, the cement holding a crown can break down. A filling may crack under years of chewing pressure. Sometimes it happens suddenly — biting into something sticky or hard — and other times a restoration loosens gradually until it finally lets go. At Bridgewater Dental Center, Dr. Sang Kim sees this regularly and can typically address it the same day you call.
What to do right away
If your filling or crown comes out, don't panic. Follow these steps while you wait for your appointment:
- Save the restoration. If you still have the crown or filling piece, rinse it gently and bring it with you. In many cases, a crown can be recemented.
- Keep the tooth clean. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to remove debris and reduce bacteria around the exposed tooth.
- Protect the tooth temporarily. Over-the-counter dental cement or even sugar-free gum can cover the exposed area until you reach our office. Avoid using household adhesives.
- Manage sensitivity. The exposed tooth may be sensitive to temperature and pressure. Avoid chewing on that side and stick to soft, lukewarm foods.
- Take pain relief if needed. Over-the-counter ibuprofen can help with any discomfort. Clove oil applied with a cotton ball can also soothe a sensitive tooth.
Why you shouldn't wait
A tooth without its filling or crown is exposed to bacteria, food particles, and biting forces it wasn't designed to handle alone. What starts as mild sensitivity can quickly progress to decay, a cracked tooth, or even an infection requiring a root canal or abscess treatment. The sooner we see you, the simpler and less expensive the repair tends to be.
Replacement options
Dr. Kim will examine the tooth and the old restoration to determine the best path forward:
- Recementation — If the crown is intact and the underlying tooth is healthy, the original crown can often be cleaned and bonded back into place during a single visit.
- New filling— When a filling has failed due to wear or new decay underneath, a fresh composite filling restores the tooth's shape and seal.
- New crown — If the old crown is damaged or the tooth structure has changed, a new custom crown provides a stronger, longer-lasting fit.
- Onlay or inlay — For teeth that need more coverage than a filling but less than a full crown, a precision porcelain or composite restoration offers an ideal middle ground.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I glue my crown back on at home?+
Please don't use household adhesives. Over-the-counter dental cement from a pharmacy is a safe temporary option until you can see us. Superglue and other adhesives can damage the tooth and make proper repair more difficult.
How long can I wait with a lost filling or crown?+
The exposed tooth is vulnerable to bacteria, decay, and further damage from the moment the restoration comes out. We recommend calling us at 540-443-2659 as soon as possible — ideally within a day or two — to prevent a small problem from becoming a bigger one.
Why did my crown fall off?+
Crowns can loosen over time as the cement breaks down, or from biting into hard or sticky foods. Decay forming underneath the crown can also weaken the seal. Dr. Kim will examine the tooth and the crown to determine what happened.
Can the same crown be put back on?+
In many cases, yes. If the crown and the underlying tooth are both in good condition, Dr. Kim can clean and recement the original crown during a single visit. Bring the crown with you to your appointment.
Does it hurt when a filling or crown falls out?+
It varies. Some patients feel sensitivity to temperature, pressure, or air on the exposed tooth. Others feel little discomfort. Either way, the tooth needs protection to avoid further damage or infection.
How much does it cost to replace a filling or crown in Bridgewater?+
Recementing an existing crown is typically the most affordable option. A new filling or crown costs more depending on the material and complexity. We accept most insurance plans and offer our Virginia Dental Club membership for patients without coverage.
