The Foundation of Dental Health
Teeth Cleaning & Exams
The single most important thing you can do for your dental health is show up twice a year. Here's what happens when you do.

What a routine visit includes
A standard cleaning and exam at Bridgewater Dental Center takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Your hygienist handles the cleaning; Dr. Kim performs the exam. Together, they give you a complete picture of your oral health — and a clear plan for keeping it that way.
The cleaning (prophylaxis)
- Scaling — gentle removal of plaque and hardened tartar from above and just below the gum line, using hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers.
- Polishing — a mildly abrasive paste buffs surface stains and leaves teeth smooth.
- Flossing — thorough flossing between every tooth.
- Fluoride — a varnish application to strengthen enamel (recommended for most patients).
The exam
- Visual inspection of every tooth for decay, cracks, and wear.
- Periodontal evaluation — measuring gum pockets to check for gum disease.
- Bite and jaw assessment for TMJ issues or alignment changes.
- Oral cancer screening — a quick check of your tongue, cheeks, lips, and throat.
- X-rays as needed — we don't take them every visit, only when clinically indicated.
Why twice a year?
Even the best home care can't remove hardened tartar. Plaque that stays on teeth for more than 48 hours begins to mineralize into calculus — and once that happens, only professional instruments can remove it. Left alone, tartar leads to gum inflammation, cavities, and eventually bone loss. A cleaning every six months catches buildup before it becomes a problem. For patients with a history of gum disease, we may recommend every three to four months — see our periodontal maintenance page for details.
What if it's been a while?
No lectures. No judgment. Whether it's been one year or ten, you're welcome here. We'll start where you are, take things at your pace, and build a plan that works. If there's significant buildup, we may spread the cleaning over two visits to keep it comfortable. Sedation is available if you need it — just ask when you call.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a cleaning and exam take?+
A typical visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Your hygienist handles the cleaning and Dr. Kim performs the exam. We never rush — we take the time to do it right.
Will my teeth cleaning hurt?+
Most patients find cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or it's been a while since your last visit, let us know — we can adjust our technique and offer numbing options to keep you at ease.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?+
No. We only take X-rays when clinically indicated, not on a rigid schedule. For most patients, a full set is taken every few years with occasional bite-wing X-rays in between.
What if it's been several years since my last cleaning?+
You're welcome here — no lectures, no judgment. If there's significant buildup, we may spread the cleaning over two comfortable visits. Sedation is also available if you need it.
Is a cleaning covered by insurance?+
Most dental insurance plans cover two cleanings and exams per year. For patients without insurance, our Virginia Dental Club membership includes cleanings, exams, X-rays, and discounts on additional treatment.
Why do I need to come in every six months?+
Even with great brushing and flossing at home, plaque hardens into tartar within 48 hours — and only professional instruments can remove it. Regular cleanings catch buildup before it leads to cavities or gum disease.
