Dental Crowns

A well-made crown does more than protect a damaged tooth — it brings back the confidence to eat, laugh, and smile without thinking twice.

When a crown is the right choice

A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over a tooth weakened by decay, fracture, or a large filling that can no longer support itself. At Bridgewater Dental Center, Dr. Sang Kim recommends crowns when a tooth still has a healthy root but needs structural reinforcement to function safely. For patients across Bridgewater, Harrisonburg, and Rockingham County, crowns are one of the most reliable ways to preserve a natural tooth and avoid extraction.

Types of crowns we offer

Not every tooth needs the same material. Dr. Kim will help you choose the best option based on the tooth's location, your bite forces, and your aesthetic goals.

  • All-ceramic crowns — Ideal for front teeth where appearance matters most. They mimic natural translucency and color beautifully.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) — A proven combination of strength and aesthetics. The metal core provides durability while the porcelain exterior blends with surrounding teeth.
  • Zirconia crowns — Extremely strong and biocompatible, making them an excellent choice for back teeth that endure heavy chewing pressure. Zirconia also works well for patients with metal sensitivities.

The crown process

Most crowns at our Bridgewater office are completed in two visits. At the first appointment, Dr. Kim prepares the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accept the crown. Detailed impressions are taken and sent to our lab, and a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime. At the second visit, the permanent crown is checked for fit, adjusted as needed, and cemented into place. The entire process is comfortable, and sedation is available for patients who need it.

How long do crowns last?

With proper care — brushing, flossing, and regular checkups — a well-made crown can last fifteen years or longer. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or grinding your teeth will help extend its lifespan. If you clench or grind at night, Dr. Kim may recommend a night guard to protect both your crown and your natural teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a dental crown last?+

A well-made crown can last fifteen years or more with good oral hygiene and regular checkups at our Bridgewater office. Avoiding hard foods like ice and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth will help extend its lifespan.

Does getting a crown hurt?+

Not at all. Dr. Kim numbs the area thoroughly before beginning, and most patients say the experience feels similar to having a filling placed. Sedation is also available if you're anxious about dental work.

How many visits does a crown take?+

Most crowns require two visits to our Bridgewater office. At the first appointment we prepare the tooth and place a temporary crown. At the second visit, the permanent crown is fitted and cemented into place.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?+

A veneer covers only the front surface of a tooth and is used mainly for cosmetic improvement. A crown wraps around the entire tooth and provides structural support for teeth that are cracked, decayed, or weakened.

Can a crowned tooth get a cavity?+

The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath is still vulnerable where the crown meets the gumline. Brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings at Bridgewater Dental Center protect that margin and keep your crown healthy.

Are dental crowns covered by insurance?+

Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of crown costs when the procedure is deemed medically necessary. Our team will check your benefits and walk you through your out-of-pocket estimate before treatment begins.
